In praise of quiet adventure games

June 14, 2026 · Marek Horvath

Hollow Tide barely has mechanics in the traditional sense. No combat, no timers, no fail states to speak of. You wander a flooded town and slowly understand it. And it's one of the more memorable things I've played this year.

There's a growing space for calm games on mobile, and I think it suits the platform. Phones are intimate — you hold them close, often alone, often winding down. A moody, unhurried adventure fits that moment better than a twitchy shooter.

What makes Hollow Tide work is restraint. It trusts you to notice things, to sit with a scene, to figure out a puzzle without a flashing arrow pointing at the answer. That trust is rare and worth celebrating.

If you've been burned out by noisy games demanding your attention every second, something this quiet is a genuine reset.
